About Sean… hey, that’s me!

24 Jan 2007 in Uncategorized by Sean Aiken

I am always up for an adventure, love meeting new people and generally like to bring some fun to whatever it is I am doing. I also love to travel and have backpacked throughout Europe on three separate occasions, coast to coast throughout Canada, Eastern and Western USA, the Caribbean, and most recently at the start of 2006 South East Asia.

I am 26 years old, have been involved in sports my whole life and played on the varsity mens volleyball team at College. I graduated in 2005 with a Business Administration degree, top of my class with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average and was voted the Class Valedictorian.

I spent the fall of 2006 living and taking French courses in Quebec, and would say I have an Intermediate-Advanced understanding of the french language, oral and written. When I am not traveling around doing a different job each week, home is Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada.

So what now? Well that’s a good question and I am hoping you can help me find the answer to that. Offer me a One Week Job, show me the ropes of the world, get some publicity for yourself or your business and donate some money to a great campaign!

If you would like to take a look at some of my previous travels, here are some journal entries and videos that I have made:

South East Asia
Waiting for Life to Begin - Mae Sot, Thailand

“I wake up realizing the familiar acquaintance of feeling lost accompanies me and I see a long day of passing time ahead. I think of home, my purpose, where I should be right now, what I should be doing. I begin to think how difficult life can be, its finality and even feel a little sorry for myself.I go downstairs and sit down for breakfast with my friend, an illegal migrant from Burma who runs the guesthouse I am staying in. His face appears more burdened than usual so I ask him how he is doing? He tells me things could be getting unsafe for him and that he will be heading to live in the jungle at one of the nearby refugee camps for six months to a year at the end of February.

I am speechless. I realize instantly how trivial my questions are and that asking myself such questions of life is a freedom many are not so lucky to have. I learn a valuable lesson I will not forget… ” continue reading

Home Sweet Home - Vancouver, Canada

“I arrive at Vancouver International, sandals in hand as I clear customs and proceed barefoot through the airport to the baggage claim. The texture of the carpet seems foreign compared to the hot tarmac, rocks and sand that I have become accustomed to over the past few weeks. Without thinking I stop just before I reach the final gate to put my sandals on, not aware at the time the significance of my simple action…” continue reading

Quebec French Immersion Program
Time to say goodbye - Quebec, Canada

“…I have learned a lot more than just french in my time here. One thing that I have realized is that no matter where you are, people are people. People and the relationships you have with others is the most important thing on this Earth. I always knew this, yet it occurred to me again in an environment such as this…” continue reading

    Sean,

Just read an article on you in the Windsor Star (Windsor, Ontario). Congratulations on really pursuing your passion. But most importantly great job on doing your LARGE part in trying to make a difference and ending Child Poverty in Canada.

Thank-you for being one of the many “good” Canadians, who make Canada such a respected place in the world.

    Good luck
    Bridget

Hi Sean, I read your article in The Star in our local paper here in Oceanside. What a unique idea and what a great rolemodel you are for all those young people out there. And you are right if you find something to do you love you won’t work a day in your love. I am involved parttime (next to my regular business) with a company called Usana. This company has a passion to help people to improve their health, but also to give them a way out of the rat race if they so choose.
They are heavily involved with The Children’s Hunger Fund. They are all about giving back to society. The company attracts people with similar mindsets. When you go to my website there is a link that will bring you to the usana website. Have a look at it and see what you think and if you have questions about the possibilities I will gladly make the time to sit down with you.
It is nice to see your enthusiasm..

I am so happy to see your project off the ground and running!! Can’t wait till you’re back in Quebec (soon!). I hope we can get together for a beer or two so I can hear all about your adventures so far.
You are doing such a great thing — the site is awesome and you seem to have it all together really well. Don’t give up!

Thanks so much Kristina! Yeah things are going really well so far. I am heading to Edmonton the first week of April, then it’s off to Quebec so I will be out that way pretty soon!

Not sure how I am going to get there yet, but I will get there!

    Hi Sean:

I really admire your idea. You know, I am now almost fourty, but still don’t know what I want to do. I am a mother of two children and now un employment. I would like to go back to school and get a university degree. At the same time, I want to get a job and raise my kids comfortably.

I will talk about you to whom ever has a job for you in Quebec City.

    Hey

I just saw you on Global National (June 21/’07) and I must say WOW, you are doing such a great thing and helping out children at the same time.
After I saw you on the news I looked you up on the web and thought…YES, someone else feels like I do. Not wanting to settle for less, scared that I will be stuck in a job for 30 odd years that I hated, just like my folks. I don’t want to be like that.

I want a job where I enjoy getting up in the morning, something that makes me happy. But it’s so hard, ppl don’t want to take a change on someone for a job that they don’t have the “papers” for.

How did you get started? How do you talk with new employers about getting a job for a week?

I want to try what you are doing (as I’m sure my folks will disagree with) but I dont want to merely exsit I want to LIVE!!!

thanks for your story, keep up the great work. You are truely an insperation to your generation which is mine as well.
Wish you the best and keep on keeping on

    Sean,

We live in Victoria, BC. Our daughter Tanya participated in a volleyball camp during spring break in Burnaby BC and really enjoyed you there! Proving it’s attitude and good will and character that beat out all other skill sets - though she said you were great at volleyball too!!!

    Hi Sean,
Congrats on the coverage in the NYT today! Such a cool idea for a project - I love it. I hope you’re enjoying it, I’m sure you’ll be able to score a book deal out of it :-) - get yourself an agent, stat! I am good friends with a teacher here in Minneapolis, I’ve passed your details on to her.

Anyway, congratulations again and best of luck. I really admire your guts. (Not literally but you know)

    Hi Sean,
I read the article about you in the NY Times, and you inspired me. As a 26 year-old who has bounced around from job to job since graduating from college, I can definitely relate to your desire to find work that you are passionate about, work that gives your life meaning.

If you are interested in hiring me, that would be great.

    Hi Sean,

Kudos to you for such an innovative project! I’ll admit I’m a little jealous - what a great way to travel and see how other people live and work. Best of luck to you.

    hey-
read the nyt article and just wanted to offer an alternative interpretation to the “I’ve been around 60 years and I’ve yet to find something I’m passionate about except your mother”… work isn’t everything, and i think the fact that he can even make this statement means that he’s lived a darn amazing life (the article skirted this point!). just thought it’s worth noting that though passion about work can be incredibly important to happiness/personal satisfaction, it’s surely not everything: i.e. good luck finding sponsors for a project to find the love of your life in 52 weeks!

your project looks extremely awesome- best of luck in the last 14 weeks :)

    Sean,
My dad showed me an article about you in his magazine, nations restaurant news. There was a picture of you cooking pizza in Cape Cod which is not too far from where I live. We went to your website and I read about your jobs and what you are doing. I decided to use your story for my class project that I have to present to everyone because I think it is a cool thing you are doing. I put all the places that you worked on a map and am going to talk about what jobs you were doing.

I hope I can do something like this someday.

    Sean,

I just saw you on Rachael Ray and I am so envious of your adventures. I’m a 37 year mother of 2 and quit my job last year to go back to school full time. I’m working on my Bachelors in Business and have no clue what I want to do with it. I, like you, want to find something I’m passionate about, not just a job. I did that as a travel agent for 17 years and hated everything about it except getting to travel on occasion. I wish you much luck and hope you find exactly what your heart desires. God Speed.

    Hi.

Not sure that I had anything specific to say except, thank you. I don’t think I have the guts (yet) to do something like this. But knowing that someone somewhere is doing it makes me think that maybe one day, I can too.
