Week Eight Announced - Dairy Farmer
This week I will be working with the Slomp family on their 300 acre organic dairy farm in Rimbey, Alberta. Today I am heading to an organic milk convention where I will be meeting George, the head farmer, and afterwards will be heading back to the farm with him. Apparently his girlfriend is a Yoga instructor so perhaps I will be able to keep up with my newly developed Yoga skills in farm country.
My tasks for the week will include milking cows, shovelling manure, feeding the calves, and general barn maintenance. I remember milking cows once when I was on an Elementary school field trip which was quite the experience, but I have been told that now they have machines for that and so don’t need to worry about my lack of aim or the spray back.
I am really looking forward to the week ahead as I have always wanted to try out working on a farm, yet have never previously had the opportunity. As I continue with One Week Job, I am realizing more and more how many different options and possibilities are out there that I would love to try my hand at.
Perhaps when all is said and done, it may just be all the more difficult to decide as I won’t want to choose just one!
The next two weeks I will be working in Alberta, and then am heading back to Vancouver for a friends wedding May 19th. If you are in Vancouver and have any job offers for any of the weeks in May, send me an email!

PS - ‘Pledge Your Passion‘

I remember being traumatised as a little kid as I attempted to milk a cow and the bugger squashed me against the side of the barn with it’s arse. I’ve worked on a few farms in my travels but have yet to encounter another mad cow. But it’s good fun and definately a new experience if you’re used to city life.
Enjoy it!
Hi Sean: Cows, now? You’ve found such an udderly unique set of jobs! Glad to hear you’re milking life for all it’s worth
OneWeekJob seems like it’s allowing you to explore quite a few jobs, yet at the same time it limits you to trying out semi-unskilled labor positions. What are your thoughts on evaluating other sorts of jobs requiring a bit more in the way of training/background? Is there a TwoWeekJob or OneMonthJob in the making?
Enjoy the cows, while they can be a bit aggro like Kirsty mentioned, they’re cute as buttons.
Hey Sean,
I first read about you in one of the free newspapers in Vancouver (either 24hrs, or the Metro) and thought why did’nt i think of that?? You’ve turned a fantastic concept into reality…and i congratualte you. Hope your having fun while also trying to figure out your passion…and if ya ever want to meet in vancouver ( i live in surrey)..feel free to email me.
June
Well I have yet to be squished, which is nice, but splattered by cow manure on several occasions… can’t say the same.
Jen, nice! It has been pretty cowabunga. You will be seeing me in some suit and tie positions soon, not saying that those require any more skill, but different anyways.
Sure June, let’s meet up, give me a call anytime. I will be back in Vancouver first week of May for the month.

Way to go Sean!
Keep up the positive thougths and good works! Saw you on the Alan Kerns Careers website.
I’m following along from my workplace in the UK! I’m traveling and working as a product designer. I am quite happy with my career choice but I won’t be satisfied until I really get going with the environmental design aspects.
Good luck on your journey!
Kara
