Finding An Eye For Manhattan

29 Nov 2007 in Job Updates by Sean Aiken

300 W57th StreetI met with James yesterday morning at his apartment in Lower Manhattan. He gave me an idea as to what future photo shoots he had in mind and what kind of location he would need. He said that he wanted a modern, simple, sleek, clean look, with some depth to it.

So I hit the streets with camera in hand cruising the mid-town Manhattan area in search of the perfect photo shoot location. I think that I had a good idea of what he was looking for and took a bunch of photos, though I will find out this morning when I meet with James to go over them. Here is on of them.

If you will be near a news stand today (Thursday), there is a column about One Week Job in the Style section of The New York Times.

Got here via Gawker. I’m loving what you’re doing. My hubby always tells me I have no focus. It’s tough, though, when you want to give everything a whirl!

Thanks for the tip on VocationVacations.

Sean I love your spirit. You are bringing an understanding and acumen for others of your generation.
I am 65 and I did one job a year for my life. I got a teachers degree in 1964 and used my degree as a ticket to an interesting and rewarding life. I have taught in many ghettos of America, the Appalachian Mountains, flew as a flight attendant, helped set up casting for minority extra youth in Hollywood etc. All my friends (and parents) thought I was crazy as they went to the same job saved up for retirement and “did it right.” Over half of them either died before they got to retirement, lost their savings in the dot com bust, divorce or poor investments. Guess what I am still enjoying my life. What am I doing now? Working on my Masters in Ed, staying fit as a dishwasher, floor hopper and completing my memoirs. Go for it, create, and find your place in this world and kudos for helping others through your charity donations. In addition, thanks for working period as you are supporting my diminutive social security check.

When you are close to being finished with this, you might want to explore the aptitude testing offered by the Johnson O’Connor Foundation. You might find good reasons why some jobs were so appealing and others just not a good fit, based on your own portfolio of aptitudes.

JOC has been around for 60 or so years, and tests for about 20 different aptitudes. They say that of those, only one is something you can change (vocabulary); for the rest, what you’ve got is what you’ve got, and you’ll probably be happiest in a job or career that utilizes the ones you’ve got and doesn’t call much for aptitudes you lack.

I commend them to your attention, and will be interested to see how their testing fits with what you learn about yourself in the process of this year. Bravo!
